Selectively Girly

Over the years, I have discovered that I am what you might call “selectively girly,” by which I mean that there are certain female domains that hold a lot of appeal for me, while others bore me to tears. I love clothes and shoes: I watch What Not to Wear religiously, and shoe-shopping is my favorite hobby (besides cooking, of course). Makeup and jewelry, however, are not nearly as interesting in my opinion: I wear the exact same makeup every day, and my pearl studs and cross ring are pretty much the only pieces of jewelry I ever remember to put on. How about you? Are you a girly-girl?

Monday

I never had my afternoon snacks so I was hungrier than normal after dinner. I noshed on some snack mix…then I had my delectable smoothie.

Tuesday

I had a craving for my second favorite Southern food (behind collard greens), cheese grits. I healthified my version with reduced-fat cheese and added some fiber with some glorious broccoli. Tasty, but it didn’t keep me full for long.

CIMG7770I headed out for a little shopping trip with my mom and Katie. My mom got several outfits out of the trip; I came back with a new vegetable steamer and some red polka-dotted oven mitts. Each to his own:) Anyway, when I came back I dug into the family’s extensive soup supply. When I opened up the can, I quickly realized that the tofu component was pretty minimal, so I cubed up some of my own to add to it. There were a fair amount of veggies–they were hiding at the bottom of the bowl. The coconut made this soup taste almost like a cream-based soup–yum!CIMG7771

CIMG7777For dinner, I whipped up a super simple lentil loaf. I purposely made a double batch tonight so that I could have a lentil loaf sandwich later this week. I’ve done this before, but I usually ending up eating the whole batch in one sitting. I controlled myself this evening, however, so look for this again in the future. ALSO, this was my first time trying Fage 2% (rather than 0%). Verdict: DELICIOUS. It’s amazing how much just a little bit of fat can change the flavor!

Off to finish watching the sneak preview of Glee–it’s bringing me back to my days as a choir dork!

Ciao for now.

  1. Hi lovely,
I’m definitely NOT a girly girl. I do love getting nice clothes, but I’m not a shoe kinda gal at all. I like my flip flops :] I also wear the SAME make up everyday, and the same jewelry. I wear my claddagh ring every single day on my middle finger of my right hand. I never take it off. I also always have my tiffany heart earrings in.

I’ve never had grits before, but I’ve always been intrigued. You’re making me crave some grits girl!

    <3

  2. btw I watched Glee tonight :] I loved it.. I was cracking up!!

  3. hey girl!! i can totally relate to being ‘selectively girly’ hahaha LOVE the way you put it!!

ahh drooling over your tofu! and isn’t fage 2% the best thing ever?

    have a great day

  4. I am SUCH a girly girl! I do have my athletic side that moves away from being so girly, but overall, I’m a girl. Period. :) (As I type looking at my freshly-painted hot pink fingernails haha)…The lentil loaf looks/sounds DElicious! I have a huuuge bag of lentils that I have no idea what to do with…but now I have the perfect dinner idea! I hope you’re having a wooonderful week, girl!

  5. I watched Glee too. I loved it! Kind of a cross between Mean Girls and Waiting for Guffman.

I am a semi-girly girl like you too. I am obsessed with hair/makeup, but kind of let the clothes/jewelry slide. If your hair and makeup look good, you can wear anything, right? ;)

I am going to make that lentil loaf, thanks for the recipe link!

And I have to tell you, I have made about five recipes out of ED&BV so far, and they are have been insanely good, so thanks for your recs on that cookbook!

  6. We are so similar! I feel the same way about clothes and shoes vs. makeup and jewelry. I always buy the same makeup and it’s always the cheap stuff, and I rarely ever wear jewelry apart from earrings and the occasional necklace. I’ve forgotten to put on my ring once or twice…that’s going to take some getting used to, lol.

Mmm, I need me some cheese grits after looking at these pictures!

My friend is now obsessed with Glee and really wants me to watch it! I’m excited! Have a wonderful Wednesday, Caroline!

  7. I was a tomboy when I was younger but I consider myself a girly girl now. I love all the clothes and makeup!

    The cheese grits look divine!

  8. I love everything girly! But being girly takes some serious effort to look cute and nice. So even though I adore being girly, I generally end up saving it for days when I have time. And on every other day, I just dress in my normal, rushed, out-of-the-door fashion. :P

I missed Glee today, BOO. I think it’s up for download tomorrow though, so I’d better catch up pronto. :)

  9. I’m not 100% girly girl either. I like clothes, shoes and bags, but not a big fan of makeup and jewelry yet. I guess it’s because we’re not old enough to need them! :)

  10. I would say I’m somewhat girly…but I dunno! I LOVE clothes and shoes…but I hate going shopping for them!!! I like to just walk in and find what I want…the actual shopping part drives me bonkers. Maybe this is a matter of impatience rather than girliness =)

Mmm Fage 2% = Love! I refuse to eat fat free anything!!

  11. I love the acai granola! Yum!

I’m not a girly girl at all! I pretty much never change my earrings and only wear my wedding bands. Make up is pretty much the same everyday and I’m not big on shoes and purses!

  12. I’ve been meaning to try that Amy’s soup, it looks so good!

Sometimes, I don’t even think I was meant to be a girl. I NEVER wear make-up, in fact, the thought of eye shadow or eye liner terrifies me because I have no idea how to put it on…I have wide feet, so shoe shopping isn’t too fun either…

I do have a ton of jewelry though. So I’m sort of girly? Oh, I also hate hate hate chick flicks…hahaha I’m just digging myself a deeper hole here :)

  13. Caroline,

I’m def. a selective girly girl. I do love a good outfit, but I can’t do hair or make up to save my life. Luckily, with curly hair, all I really have to do is scrunch it with some mousse and run out the door. I get around the make up thing by just wearing mascara and red lipstick. People see the lipstick and think I actually know what I’m doing… little do they know! :D

    With Love,

    Emily

  14. I totally understand the ‘selectively girly’ thing. I’m much more comfortable in jeans and a top than anything even remotely more dressed up. I have studs in my ears to keep the holes from closing, but I only wear jewelery when I have to.

    I haven’t seen Glee… maybe I’ll check it out.

    Have a wonderful day!

    Emma

  15. I’m definitely a selectively girly too! I’ve had the same make up routine for the past 7 years (ok it may be time to change it up a bit) but get new clothes every few weeks. And I love a good spa day!

  16. I’m the same way as you- I like clothes and dresses, but I don’t care much about makeup. In fact, I only wear makeup on special occasions or when I go out. That lentil loaf looks goooood!

  17. ooh the lentil loaf looks great!!! lol i have been watching what not to wear, … did you watch “debbie”? she was clinton’s friend that he nominated. :)

  18. i feel like i’m really girly but also really tomboy-ish. i love makeup and fashion (shoe shopping is totally my favorite too), and i also love sports- playing or watching- and sweating at the gym. i think it’s a reasonable balance!

  19. Sameee I love girly stuff :) But recently I’ve been spending more money on food then clothing haha I guess thats a true foodie sign..

  20. i am not girly at all. i love winter and hoodies and i wear flip flops and sweats at any chance i can get. but i kinda have to be girly at work, so i dress up. i am like you, same makeup routine and jewelry every day. but i can shop for clothes for days on end if you let me!

i love that brand of granola but havent tried that kind! havent even seen it actually. ill look.

almonds + GY is one of my favorites!

  21. oooooooh that is spiffy and it is NEW granola!!! IT looks fantastic and yummy i can’t imagine how tasty it is….awww thanks for sharing. :)

  22. I definitely have girly girl tendencies, not gonna lie…….I love the show gossip girl, but I even loved reading the books my freshmen and sophomore year of high school! haha! That’s pretty girly if you ask me!

And i’ve never even tried fage 0% but i’m newly obsessed with the 2% !! It makes any meal or snack soooo delicious.

  23. hahha I am the LEAST girly person ever. If I had the choice, I would live in sweats my entire life. The only time I LIKE dressing up is for a super formal event.. but besides that, I’m sweats all the way!

  24. I’m a girly girl, but more so since i’ve been married:)

  25. You know, I’ve never really had “Southern comfort food.” Especially not in all it’s fatty glory! Ha, but I do think it’s something I should try… just thought I would share :)

  26. totally craving both that soup and lentil loaf!!

  27. [...] same dish twice. Hence, today’s lunch. Rather than simply heating up the Thai coconut soup from Monday, I used it as a cooking liquid for some veggies and chickpeas. I let it simmer for a few [...]

  28. I am so not a girly girl! And yet, I’m a figure skater – talk about contradiction! HA!

That Amy’s soup sounds really good, too bad I’ve never seen it up here :(
