Once again, my perfectionist tendencies have gotten the best of me. I’m injured. Again.

It all began a few weeks ago. With all my free time over the holidays, I was doing a lot of running. My increase in mileage caused some slight discomfort in my hip, so I took a week-long break to ellipticize. I thought the injury had mended itself last week when I made my half-marathon goal and its accompanying training plan. Wrong.

Upon beginning my run on Friday morning, the hip tenderness had returned. However, due to my irrational desire to stick to the training plan, I ran through the pain. Poor choice, Caroline.

As a result of not listening to my body, this past weekend has been filled with lots of hobbling around and plenty of quality time with the heating pad.

Being sidelined like this when my motivation is so high frustrates me to no end. Why, oh why, won’t my body cooperate?

When was the last time your drive to achieve a goal backfired on you? How did you cope?

Here’s how I fed myself during the past two days of healing…

Saturday

After a long elliptical session, I made a cheesey egg white omelet for breakfast.

In the afternoon, Seth and I headed to Whole Foods for fire wood. While we were there, we hit up the salad bar too.

After a much needed run to Target for a heating pad and BenGay, we hit up Trader Joe’s for a few taco night supplies.

Sunday

PB & J never gets old.

The afternoon agenda included much shopping, so we stopped off at Crisp again for lunch.

Amidst some last minute organic chemistry homework, I made a simple veggie burger wrap.

Before I go, I want to remind everyone to enter my Tandoor Chef giveaway—contest ends Wednesday!

Alright, I need to get some rest before classes start tomorrow. Good night!

  1. Be careful, Caroline!! Hip injuries are paaaainful. Hope it goes away ASAP.

  2. Yikes! I hope you feel better soon; and good luck with classes!

  3. Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear you’re injured. Get thee to the doctor, stat!

  4. Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that you’re injured! That is such a bummer! Do you know what the problem is exactly? I’ve suffered from ITBS (not to be confused with IBS :P ), but foam rolling, stretching, and taking time off helped a lot.
It sounds like you’re doing all the right things! You could go to a physical therapist to get them to check it out. Hope you heal quickly!

  5. Sorry to hear about your hip :(

Do you know what the problem is?

  6. A couple years ago I sprained my toe while on vacation in Cuba. I was REALLY pissed. I had plans of running on the beach, playing tennis, hiking, hitting up the resort gym. I sent a frustrated e-mail to my mom and she wrote back saying “Susie, it’s just God’s way of slowing you down.” I think of that every time I hurt myself when my motivation is still high. Even though I’m rarin’ to go, sometimes the universe needs to take extreme measures to make me chill out when I forget to. Hope it heals quickly!! xo

  7. Aw, that sucks :/ Hang in there!

  8. oh no! I hope you rest up and get well, even though the resting can be so frustrating! Are you going to a doc?
I started running a little while ago and my hip was giving me problems and I had to stop =/ May be a good investment to get your running mechanics looked at too.

  9. Sorry about the hip. Take care! Get better soon.

  10. I’m sorry! I hope you heal quickly and milk this for getting pampered in the meantime!

  11. Feel better sweet, Caroline! I can totally relate with being injured due to running as I was last fall. No fun indeed. And good luck with classes starting!

  12. oh gosh! I hope you get better soon- be careful!

  13. yuck :( is this the front of your hip, or the back? i had an injury with a very sore tendon on the front part. i saw a chiropractor who does ART (active release) in durham and it really helped!

i totally hear you on the tendency to ignore little twinges — sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s a ‘real’ injury and you can easily trick yourself into denial! but i’ve figured out recently that it’s better to take a long-term view of running than worry about that week’s training plan.

    feel better!!!

  14. oh no! I hope you feel better!!! That TJs black bean soup looks awesome. Such a warm comforting dinner. Take care of yourself

  15. I am going through the exact same issue with my hip! I increased my mileage too far/fast & ignored some hip discomfort. That soon turned into hip pain & hobbling around. Took a month off and tried to run again last week, it felt ok running but the day after it was very painful. And there went my 1st 1/2 marathon plans. Should have listened to my body initially:( Hope yours heals faster, would love to know what other exercise you are doing while you are sidelined!

  16. Sorry to hear :-( As someone who’s just getting over an injury, I know how frustrating it is when you push yourself too hard and past pain and have to look back on that. The sooner you get to rest + ice, the sooner you’ll be back out there.

  17. Sorry about your hip! Hope you feel better soon!

  18. I’m so sorry to hear about your hip! I may have suffered from the same injury, and thankfully it healed rather quickly after I cut back on my mileage for a bit and started stretching my hip flexors like it was my job. Here’s a tutorial, maybe worth a try!

  19. oh no caroline, so sorry your injured! I know how you feel ugh, so frustrating, especially when working towards goals and races. Just get as much rest as possible so you come back strong!

  20. So sorry to hear about your injury! I have had hip issues in the past and it is best to just wait them out and not try to push it. Hang in there and feel better soon :)

  21. I’m so jealous that y’all have a Trader Joe’s close! We have to drive to Vegas for our closest one – although I never need much of an excuse to head to Vegas…
I’m sorry about your injury – not being able to run AND knowing that you might have made it worse is the worst feeling! Is it something that might be long-term?

  22. hope your hip heals soon! as others have suggested..maybe getting your running mechanics analyzed and making sure you have the right shoes would be helpful. :) once i added arch inserts into my brooks, all of my knee problems mysteriously went away!

  23. As someone who is married to a triathlete I know the frustration you feel when your training does not go the way you want it to. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs to heal. Another suggestion that my husband had was to try foam rolling. It really does help. Take care.

  24. Love those eggs! One of my favorite lunches.

Goodluck with the injury… my neighbor was running her first marathon and had a great amount of pain in her hip. Turns out she had a hairline fracture, but kept running! Needless to say she was sidelined for quite a while…

  25. I totally miss my Trader Joe days when I used to walk just a couple of blocks to get some great ingredients for a new meal. And that was when I was attending college!

Your pictures are amazing (what kind of camera do you use) and your blog is sweet! Keep ‘em coming. :)

  26. Ouch! You poor thing. I’m working on my fourth month of recovery for a running injury to my Achilles. Sidelines is a tough place to be.
But I would totally feel better with a cheese omelet like that! Beautiful job. What’s the side for that omelet? I’m just nosy.

  27. Hope you heal quickly, Caroline…been there, done that!

  28. I hope your injury gets better girl! I know how frustrating injuries are!!!

  29. Sorry to hear about your injury, babe. That’s so disheartening! I hate it when that happens. Luckily, I have so far remained mostly injury free [knock on wood]. I hope your hip feels better soon!

  30. I too have ignored what my body was telling me with some knee pain during running and I have learned my lesson. It’s hard when you have goal or are in training but it’s always best to listen :) I hope you mend very quickly and get back on track fast! Take care :)

  31. UGH, I”m so sorry to hear about your injury. I’ve struggled with a lot of pain due to running in the past, and I think the most important thing to do is figure out if you need total rest from exercise or if you can help by cross training or strengthening moves. The latter was true for me, and it really really helped! Also, a visit to the physical therapist can help shed light on what’s causing the problem.
