Smoothie Round-Up, 1st Edition

You may have noticed something unusual about my daily meal postings in recent weeks. With the exception of the last semester, I have been showing you all my smoothie creations on a daily basis. Suddenly, said blended beverages have once again mysteriously disappeared from the Broccoli Hut.

Rest assured, I am still consuming my beloved smoothies, but I have decided to end my practice of posting them daily. Why?

1) Because of my smoothie-a-day habit, the combinations can become a bit repetitive. My infatuation with mango-hemp smoothies can be interesting for only so many days in a row.

2) I would much prefer to display only the tastiest combinations in “smoothie round-ups” like this one. Although I have provided a smoothie tutorial, many of you ask me for specific smoothie recipes. Ask, and you shall receive, my bloggie friends.

Basically, in the future I’ll be periodically posting my favorite smoothie experiments with specific measurements. Enjoy the first smoothie round-up!

Berry Spirutein Protein Shake

This combination features my all-time favorite Spirutein flavor, Blueberries ‘N Cream. It has slightly more sugar (12 grams) than other flavors, but perhaps that is what makes it so magically delicious.

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup unsweetened  soymilk
  • 1 serving Blueberries N Cream Spirutein
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 T. Nature’s Path Pumpkin Flax granola

Place all ingredients except granola in the blender in the order listed above. Blend until mixture has reached your desired consistency, pour into a glass, and top with granola.

Strawberry Coconut Spirutein Protein Shake

Strawberry, vanilla, and coconut make for one delicious combination. I added stevia to the mix in this recipe because I used unsweetened protein powder.

  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp. coconut extract
  • 1 serving unsweetened vanilla Spirutein
  • 1 packet stevia
  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 T unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 T Nature’s Path Pumpkin Flax granola

Place all ingredients except shredded coconut and granola in the blender in the order listed above. Blend until mixture has reached your desired consistency, pour into a glass, and top with coconut and granola.

Peach-Strawberry Vegan Protein Shake

My most recent discovery in protein powders is BioChem’s Vegan Protein. Perhaps due to its inclusion of rich vanilla extract and xantham gum (a common thickener), it makes every combination taste like a milkshake.

  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 serving BioChem vanilla vegan protein
  • 1 packet stevia
  • 1 cup frozen peaches
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 T. Nature’s Path Pumpkin Flax granola

Place all ingredients except granola in the blender in the order listed above. Blend until mixture has reached your desired consistency, pour into a glass, and top with granola.

I’ve used my favorite granola of the moment (pumpkin flax) in all the recipes above, but feel free to add your own crunchy favorite.

What are some of your favorite smoothie combinations?

  1. My favorite smoothie combinations all came from you, remember? :-D

  2. i needed this tutorial! i came back from my run today dying for a smoothie, but honestly didn’t know where to start with a limited fridge repertoire :) i tried to break up some ice that was in the freezer but when that failed i gave up and just drank some oj!

any smoothie options that do not involve protein powder?

  3. I ordered myself a buttload of the Spirutein samples and didn’t like any of them. I’ve heard RAVE reviews about the blueberries and cream one though and ironically enough – that’s the only one I didn’t order. FAIL!

  4. great post!!! i love recipes because i tend to mess up dishes when i eye-ball things haha.

i love the old simple almond milk + frozen banana + scoop almond or peanut butter + handful icecubes

  5. Any smoothie that involves banana, chocolate, and peanut butter is a favourite of mine. Or maybe some coconut. Also good :)
