Snack-time Observations

As I’ve mentioned on several occasions, people-watching is one of my favorite pastimes. I’ve always had an interest in people and the infinite variety thereof; observing my fellow humans’ mannerisms and interactive behaviors is a form of endless entertainment for me.

One particular sect of human behavior that particularly interests me is eating and food selection. I’m totally that creeper who is secretly analyzing the contents of your shopping cart at the grocery store; I’m that girl eavesdropping on your order at restaurants. The foods one eats are historically indicative of the nature of the person himself. Brillat-Savarin voiced a profound truth when he said “Tell me what kind of food you eat, and I will tell you what kind of man you are.”

Anyway, I set about my typical people-watching today during class. Because most of my graduate classes are about 3 hours long, snack-time is usually necessary midway through the lecture. As if on cue, each student pulls out her carefully selected snack. Several munch on giant apples, while others wrestle with small bags of pretzels. As you’ll see below, I packed a Larabar, (which launched a lengthy conversation with my seatmate about the subtleties of the cherry pie flavor). I also spotted a few food blogger favorites, including pomegranate Chobani. I found it fascinating to see what future nutritionists chose to keep themselves satisfied.

Tell me one of your favorite snacks. How does it represent who you are?

Onto today’s snacks.

I made some scrambled egg whites for Seth yesterday, which got me craving some for myself. Hence today’s eggy breakfast.

Today marked my first day at the new job, so I packed Tomato Basil Hummus with veggies & pita to nibble on as I worked.

This week’s Bar of the Week is the chocolate chip cookie dough Larabar. I fell in love after one chocolate chip-laden bite. This might even beat out the chocolate coconut chew flavor as my favorite.

Once home from class, I was a little pooped. I slapped together a simple Asian-themed salad with edamame, oranges, peanuts, & Annie’s Gingerly Vinaigrette.

Alright, I am off to prepare for tomorrow’s food lab—we’re making French fries! Good night.

  1. I’m a people-watcher and eavesdropper extraordinaire myself – it even has escalated to the point where I go for evening walks less for exercise and more to peer into glowing open windows…

One of my favorite snack is almonds + dates + hot tea. A little sweet, al ittle salty, a little crunchy, a little carbs and something warm and comfy. It represents me because I like variety in life! :)

  6. hahahaha i loveeeee seeing what other people are eating! it gives me inspirations too! like if i can recreate it to someway i would like it :) i’m such a food store creeper its not even funny haha

  7. is that a built ny bag? i know started that company :) love the cookie dough lara bar- delish! what wrap are you using in your breakfast pic?

  8. Be careful judging people based on what’s in their shopping cart – some people, such as myself, buy their groceries at a variety of places. I used to buy all of my produce at the produce market, so when I was at the grocery store it would seem like I never bought produce which was far from the truth. That being said, I’m always fascinated to see what people bring through my checkout line.
