Sorry, Ellie.
Since the commencement of the Ellie Project, my copy of The Food You Crave has become a little tattered. The volume’s most recent injury, however, was particularly egregious:
Oops. I guess that burner was still hot. Heh.
Do your cookbooks have any war wounds? Or do you manage to keep them clean and pristine?
Careless as I may be, I certainly can eat.
For breakfast, I put together a quick waffle-wich, featuring discount peanut butter from Target.
The Goddess made an appearance at lunch.
Tonight’s evening meal was an Ellie Recipe, Tomato Tortilla Soup.
My tweaks:
-I used whole wheat tortillas instead of corn.
-I substituted water for the chicken broth.
-I chose not to puree my soup…mostly because my immersion blender is dirty!
-I added black beans for protein and a few avocado slices on top for the creaminess factor.
This soup was very fresh tasting, thanks in large part to its inclusion of fresh herbs and fresh-squeezed lime juice. However, if I were to make this again, I would add more jalapeno action and include a wider variety of vegetables.
The recipe is available online: Tomato Tortilla Soup
Off to spend some QT with my textbooks, as per usual. G’night all!

OMG I JUST finished the same peanut butter (OIAJ=heavenly). I LOVE it, but mine was not discounted! I giess another Target run is in order- I’m a sucker for a deal
I had a Goddess Wrap today too!! Thanks for the inspiration!
BTW, my water bottle always somehow manages to attack my books. I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I have had to pay fines on at least 3 books b/c of water damage! Ooopps!!!
Is that PB any good?
Mmm…tomato tortilla soup sounds lovely. And I love the presentation with the avocado sitting on top. Delicious.
I drink the big kids superfood every morning!
Wow that’s quite a battle wound! My cookbooks have food splatters all over them, especially on the recipes I make a lot. My oven mitts are slightly burned too, though you would think being oven mitts that wouldn’t happen.
What did you think of the peanut butter? I’ve tried that kind before and thought the flavor got lost when mixed with anything else.
I LOVE YOUR OBSESSION WITH COOKBOOKS. I think it ‘s awesome and wish I made as many new recipes as you do!!!
Every cookbook needs a little character, right? At least it didn’t start on fire! Your Tomato Tortilla Soup looks great! I have made a few recipes out of that cookbook and really enjoyed them.

i love your blog and its a great source of inspiration, check out the “pleasure” department for foodie news
I have a cookbook that I made several recipes all wet and scratched. I guess that’s a good sign. We really use it!
I need a cookbook cover! I’ve seen those nice glass covers that protect cookbooks from getting food-spattered. ED&BV is not looking so fantastic right now…
I have this weird OCD thing when it comes to books – I have to keep them in MINT condition!! I can’t even tear pages or write in textbooks (I know I’m weird).
I went to TJ Maxx the other day and thought of you. We need to work out a shopping trip asap
That is a crazy deal on that nut butter! I have to start considering Target a place to get groceries, wow.
In response to your question, my cookbooks are a MESS! There are food splatters all over the pages because I’m constantly running back and flipping to the pages to see if I’m doing everything right! One of those cookbook stands always seemed frivolous but they might be a good idea for me…
HAHA!!! I love that war wound from kitchen battling =) your book wears it with pride.
I agree with Caitlyn, cookbooks need character. And apparently Ellie has quite the character now!
Mine are a mess, too, but the typical pages stuck together with frosting and splatters of food everywhere. No worries!
