Spice Flub
I returned from class today in a state of extreme hunger. Once my keys had been placed on their proper hooks and my backpack had been hurled onto the floor, I blew in to the kitchen in search of some good eats. My go-to dish in situations such as these is always scrambled tofu. All it requires is a little chopping and tofu-mushing.
In my haste, I apparently chose to not actually read the labels on my spice jars. Observe:
Pretty close look-alikes, no? Well, it was about 5 minutes into the cooking process that I realized that my scramble was not looking nearly neon yellow enough. A turn of the jar revealed that I had used curry powder instead of turmeric. Oops. Granted, curry powder does contain turmeric, but I decided to throw in some additional turmeric for the authentic color:)
The end result was a slightly Indian-inspired scramble—not inedible, but I don’t think I’ll be repeating this spice flub in the future.
Have you ever mixed up ingredients in a recipe? How did the final dish turn out?
Aside from that culinary blunder, I did manage to put together some other meals properly today.
Remember my downright obsession with whole grain Cream of Wheat a few summers ago? I discovered a half-full box of it in my pantry recently, and I think I kind of love it again.
As for the mid-day meal, I had the aforementioned scramble.
Dinner tonight was an Ellie recipe, Tuscan Vegetable Soup.
No tweaks this time!
I did enjoy my soup alongside a whole grain roll, provided by the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program. These Alexia rolls have lots of nutrition with whole grain and flaxseed, plus incredible texture! They were slightly sweet too, which makes them good for soppin’ up some salty soup.
Tip: Although the package says to bake the whole bag in the oven, I opted to improvise a single-serving method by baking one in my toaster oven. The end result was still crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
I really loved the mix of vegetables and herbs in this recipe. The sage and thyme leaves complemented the zuke perfectly.
Now I must leave you to get homework done before the big Duke-UNC game!!!

Cinnamon in burritos instead of cumin? Yea, that’s me
I LOVE those rolls!
that’s so funny, b/c the tofu scramble i made this week (from super natural cooking) called for curry powder! i liked it, though
Love your to-go meal! I’d love to have it too!
Once, I accidentally poured rose water into cookies instead of vanilla extract (in my defense they were by the same company and their labels looked identical). When the batter began throwing off the scent of a flower garden I got very nervous…tasting it confirmed my suspicions that rosewater is like a plague among extracts. Any amount above a scant 1/4th of a teaspoon destroys whatever it touches!
hahahahaaha this reminds me of the other night when i sprinkled cinnamon all over my kale instead of chili powder. damn red containers!
I’m always terrified ill dump paprika in my oatmeal instead of cinnamon!! LOL, the containers look so similar and if i haven’t had any coffee- yikesss..
It could have been a whole lot worse… cayenne pepper instead of paprika…
Hehe, I’ve totally been there with mixing up turmeric and curry powder– they look so similar! Enjoy the game
My husband mixed up baking powder and baking soda when making biscuits. Result? Bitter, soapy tasting wreck.
First off, CONGRATS ON THE DUKE WINNNN! How exciting!
I’ve totally scrambled up ingredients before- mostly baking powder vs. soda in cooking
Or used a teaspoon or tablespoon of something when I was supposed to use the other. Whoops!
The soup looks yummy and my Mom LOVES those rolls! They go perfectly with soup and I love that you can make just as many as you need
PS- sorry I’ve been MIA! I will finally have a post up tomorrow morning
Oh wow! Your eats look delicious! I used to love those Alexia rolls, they are divine when they are spread with some butter and cinnamon while they are still warm. Very special! Unfortunately I am struggling with a wheat sensitivity right now so it has been bye-bye Alexia rolls
I am so going to make that soup. It looks so good. Love your blog!
I am always afraid of switching cinnamon for curry powder on my oatmeal…
On Monday, I bought the same whole grain rolls! So good!
I once grabbed garlic SALT instead of garlic powder when making garlic bread. End result: saltwater tasting garlic bread deemed inedible! Blech!
That soup looks amazing and I really need to look for some of those Alexia products. I’ve been seeing them all over blogworld lately!
