Strawberry Fields Forever
The title of tonight’s post describes the main event of my weekend.
No, I didn’t listen to the Beatles on repeat (but I have been known to do so on occasion).
I didn’t eat copious amounts of Kashi cereal (although I do that, too).
And no, I did not consume one of my Strawberry Fields Forever Salads (it’s on the agenda for later this week).
Indeed, the chosen title refers to this:
A strawberry field! Last weekend Seth and I went to a strawberry festival, but this weekend we chose to do some strawberry-picking. It was a hot and messy experience, but we didn’t leave empty-handed; we got to take home the “fruits” of our labor.
So, I have found myself with several pounds of strawberries. Quick! Tell me your best strawberry recipe!
I’ve been taking it easy on the culinary front this weekend, relying on simple sandwiches and restaurant fare. Check out the deets below:
Saturday
After last week’s parfait discovery (i.e., cottage cheese is magical), I made another cottage cheese parfait yesterday morning with fresh blackberries. Can’t wait to go blackberry picking again this summer!
I wasn’t quite sure what the day would hold, so I packed myself a simple lunch to stow away in my purse amidst our adventures in the strawberry fields.
For dinner, Seth suggested that we try Ethiopian food, a cuisine entirely new to me. However, I had heard that Ethiopian fare is quite vegetarian-friendly, so I was pumped to see what Queen of Sheba had to offer. I ordered the vegetarian combo with Yetimatim (tomato-avocado salad), Yemisir Azefah (tangy lentil salad), Kik Alich’a (split pea stew), and Yemisir Kay Watt (spicy lentils). This 100% vegan meal was incredibly delicious (and colorful!). I cleared my plate injera with no problem. Good choice, Seth!
Sunday
I breakfasted over at Seth’s house again this morning and whipped up a bowl of simple banana oat bran. I am now completely bereft of Craisins. Sadski.
I continued my freezer cleanout this afternoon my digging out some Cluckphrey patties. I attempted to make an authentic chicken-less Chick-fil-A sandwich with pickles, vegan mayo, and mustard. I added a few veggies in there too, for good measure.
Tonight I was having one of those completely uninspired nights—no creative dinner ideas came to mind. Hence, a simple hummus salad with tahini.
Alright, I am now off to get my Hulu on. Later lovelies.

Berry picking is the best! Glad you got to share that with Seth. I’m surprised places are opening already. I know blueberry farms around here start in July
I’m addicted to our local strawberries, I’ve been the last two weekends and already desiring to go again this coming Saturday. So far this has been my favorite use for them, strawberry trifle. http://johnstonesvinblanc.blogspot.com/2010/05/smoked-salmon-eggs-strawberry-trifle.html
I’m making a strawberry cobbler tomorrow night, so we’ll see how that turns out.
How amazing was the ethiopian food?! I’m getting some with my roommates tonight, and we’re pretty stoked
I tried it for the first time with my brother and his wife a few months back, and couldn’t get enough of the bread, lentil dishes and spicy vegetables! Omg. So excited.
You and Seth are too dang adorable, as always! Have a great day Caroline!
How fun! I love strawberries on oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, and blended into smoothies.
Strawberry picking sounds like so much fun – especially since you get all those strawberries to bring home! You can make a strawberry parfait, or strawberry shortcake!
I’ve always wanted to go strawberry picking! We have a few farms by our cottage but unfortunately, the farmers are pretty picky about who they let pick their strawberries. Now that I’m finally 16, I’ll be able to. Wahoo! I’m so glad you had lots of fun
. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your strawberry fields salad.
Have a lovely day!
xox
Finally a REAL strawberry field
I’ve never gone strawbs pickin’ but it sure seems fun. Were you allowed to eat as you picked? Albeit a bit dirty!
Was your meal at the restaurant served with a wrap-like thing? It looks like a lovely Parisian crepe actually!
I love cottage cheese–however, for some reason, I can’t bring myself to have it sweet! I only like it plain…weird, huh?
I love strawberry picking! My mom and I go every June.
Hey! I’m totally on Hulu right now : ) haha loves it.
How much fun to go strawberry picking! I always add them to my smoothies : )
oh my goodness! I haven’t picked strawberries in a very long time! it looks like so much fun
I love strawberry picking. And blueberry, and apple, and raspberry….
I usually just end up freezing them for smoothies, so I don’t have any great recipes for you.
LOVED the NKOTB video earlier today!
I’ve never been fruit picking, (except for wild blackberries) it lookd so fun and stained clothes are definitely a sign of a good time:)
Muffins with strawbs are yummy, strawberry compote for over yog (just heat it on slow with a touch of sugar or stevia until they get all saucy), or this recipe sounds easy and yummy- http://veganepicurean.blogspot.com/2010/04/strawberry-and-banana-sorbet.html.
English strawbs aren’t quite ready yet…:(
xxx
I love, love, love strawberry picking! So much fun and you can’t beat how fresh tasting they are.
I love sliced strawberries on toast with cashew butter. Or banana-strawberry smoothies. Or fresh strawberries in oats and/or cold cereal.
Or strawberry pancakes.
Oh the possibilities.
I have never been strawberry picking but I love to go apple picking!
I hope to go sometime this summer.
I love fruit picking! I haven’t done it for years…and always ate way more than I ended up bringing home
I had a great recipe for strawberries that use a ton- a frozen strawberry souffle. Need to hunt out the recipe- do you eat eggs? It’s pretty much just egg whites and strawberries whisked together (sweetener optional) and frozen.
everyone keeps telling me to go pick strawberries but where??? email me!
i went to that same farm this weekend and picked 18lbs! oops, im in berry heaven though! if you don’t clean out your whole freezer and want to donate to a local let me know :p CONRATS on graduating!
what mischievous faces are holding those strawberries!
Love love love the Beatles! And the strawberry picking photos!!
