Summer Reading List

Ever since about the age of 12, I remember anxiously awaiting the end of the school year—not only for the impending break from classes but also for the release of the summer reading list. Yeah, I was (and still am) that much of a word nerd. Some of my favorite books of all time have been from summer reading lists: Gone with the Wind, All the King’s Men, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, The Thornbirds…just to name a few.

Even though I have long since graduated from the era of summer reading lists, I still look for a few good reads to peruse once I have a little free time in the summer months.

With just two more weeks of classes left, the time has come to assemble my list—and I need your help!

Thus far, I have these books on the agenda:

Everything You Pretend to Know about Food and Are Afraid Someone Will Ask by Nancy Rommelmann (recommend to me by my foodie advisor!)

A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenburg (recommended to me by my classmates from gastronomy class)

I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe (I read this five years ago, just after receiving my acceptance letter to Duke—I think it would be interesting to re-read it for accuracy!)

What are some of your favorite books? What would you recommend that I add to my list?

Onto the food!

I was stumped when it came to coming up with an oatmeal topper this morning…so I just threw a little bit of everything in.

For lunch, I put together a modified version of my Sweet Potato Black Bean Salad.

Tonight’s dinner was an Ellie recipe that I’ve been eyeing for a while, Orange-Pistachio Wild Rice Salad.

My tweaks:

-I used parsley instead of basil.

-I used more pistachios than required in the recipe…just because I love them.

This is quite an eye-catching dish, no? I never would have thought to combine oranges, pistachios, and rice to make a salad, but it ended up being quite a delicious combination. In the future, however, I would omit the red onion—it overpowered all the other flavors. It looks pretty, but I am not digging the onion breath that is still lingering…

The recipe is available online: Orange-Pistachio Wild Rice Salad

Alright, I have some coupons to clip!

  1. omg, I Am Charlotte Simmons must have terrified your pre-Duke self! It’s a great book, though. If you haven’t read any of them, I recommend all of Ruth Reichl’s books. She’s had a pretty fascinating life.

  2. A homemade life was fantastic, I would read that again! I am in grad school to become a librarian, and could recommend you tons of young adult books! If you are looking for a great series, try The Hunger Games… they are so hard to put down! :)

  3. I could go on and on about books, but being that you are of a nutritional bent I must recommend that you read …sigh,I hate the title….”Skinny Chicks Don’t Eat Salad” because the advice is so sound but most important is the way she breaks it down…using imagery about the way our body processes food, would be VERY inspiring for you as you embark on your career.

I have read most diet/nutrition books but as I said this one would help you with your clients to be.

Let me know if you read it!

Also, Please read “The Help” it was a page turner. And also PLEASE read Wally Lamb…you can start with “She’s Come Undone” and also John Irving…Cider House Rules, Prayer for Owen Meany….

Oh, man. I could get down.
Let us know what you are reading! I love book recs.

  4. LOVE the new header!

  5. I want to read the first two books too, sound interesting!

  6. I’m currently reading “Water for Elephants” in anticipation of the movie coming out Easter weekend. It’s a hard one to put down (which makes it hard to focus on my final projects before I graduate undergrad). If you want an easy read, but still interesting I would recommend it. Plus old school circus is fun to read and dream about.

  7. Hi Caroline :)

Have you read ‘If not dieting then what?’ by Rick Kausmann? It’s all about mindful eating and it’s very enlightening!

  8. Your salad looks delish!

    Some books I would recommend:

The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner
The Road to Serfdom F. A. Hayek
The Great Gatby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
    Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human by Richard Wrangham

  9. I know exactly what you mean about a summer reading list! I do the same thing. The first book on my list is: Your Brain on Food by Gary L. Wenk.

Last summer I got really absorbed in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I would suggest definitely suggest the series if your interested in a romantic historical fiction type book :)

  10. Your grilled tofu looks gorgeous! I have made your sweet potato black bean salad before, and this post was a great reminder to make it again. I think the boy would love it.

The book I recommend to everyone is “Reading Lolita in Tehran” by Azar Nafisi. It’s a brilliant read.

  11. My favorite book is PRIDE AND PREJUDICE! :D

  12. If you’re looking for a great fantasy (magic, not erotica) series with a fabulously strong female lead character, I’d recommend the Sabriel series by Garth Nix. It consists of 3 books – Sabriel, Abhorsen, and Lirael. I’m normally not a big fan of fantasy novels, but I simply devoured this series. :)

If you’re looking for a homey story about food and family, I’d suggest The Lost Ravioli Recipes of Hoboken, by Laura Schenone. It’s a really charming non-fictional story about a woman in search of some family history by trying to track down her great-grandmother’s ravioli recipe… a truly great, easy read.

Keep us updated on your list… I’m trying to put one together myself!

  13. Food wise….Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
Fun…The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It’s amazing and is a movie set to be released in August
    Heavy…Room by Emma Donoghue
Memoir…Journey Into the Whirlwind by Eugenia Ginzburg-written by a woman who was in Stalin’s prison camps-my favorite book of all time.

  14. haha my summer reading list includes page six from the ny post, any gossip mag i could get my paws on and prob a few trashy novels hahaha

  15. Hey, I love your new header! I spent my whole evening yesterday writing my students’ 3rd exam, and did not check out any blogs. The end of the semester is always crazy.

I am currently listening to the audiobook The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It is the BEST thing to do when you have to do research/data analysis in front of the computer the whole day! I also got “The God of Small Things”, “Running with scissors” and “Caramelo” at the library to read as soon as the semester is over. A friend of mine has also suggested “Reading Lolita in Tehran” and “Finding Nouf”. So many books to read! :)

  16. I read I Am Charlotte Simmons my senior year of high school, when everyone was starting to get accepted to college! A couple people in my class went to Duke, and I remember talking with them about the book and what they though it would actually be like.

I just read “Faith” by Jennifer Haigh and highly recommend it.
