Super Bowl Eats—with a Healthy Twist

It seems that we all just recovered from Thanksgiving and Christmas, but yet another food holiday is already upon us—Super Bowl Sunday. Now I enjoy game day noshing as much as anyone else…but I also know that it doesn’t have to be a guilt-inducing feast of wings, nachos, and beer. Here are a few more nutritious alternatives to the usual menu items.

Craving…Chili?

Pumpkin Bulgur Chili provides the traditional chili flavors along with a heaping serving of vegetables.

Craving…Pizza?

BBQ Tofu Pizza is a twist on the usual pizza that you’d find at a Super Bowl party—the cheese, crust, and sauce are all there…why not add some fruit and plant-based protein for a more balanced pie?

Craving…Onion Rings?

You need not deprive yourself of the foods you love—just try making them in a healthful way! The secret to these Oven Baked Onion Rings is ground up baked potato chips.

Craving…something creamy?

Superbowl

Many game day menus might feature a sour-cream based dip for your potato chips, but why not satisfy that creamy craving with Edamame Hummus with baked pita and veggies?

Craving…something crunchy?

Fish (other than in the form of fish sticks, perhaps) is not exactly a staple for game day eating, but these Crab-Stuffed Wontons combine crunch with fantastic fresh flavor. Try it, you’ll like it.

Craving…something pretty?

OK, so maybe I’m the only one who has cravings for pretty food, but still these Soft Asian Summer Rolls are worth bringing to any party. I like to dip mine in a creamy cashew-based sauce.

  2. we will make our specialties this year!

  3. I love this recipe. I will have to make it soon. I bookmarked it for later. Thanks for sharing.

  4. My sister is making her homemade baked onion rings for the super bowl and I have to admit it’s the one food that I’m looking forward to the most. I like them even more than their fried cousin! :D

    Great post!

  5. Such a quintessential Caroline post! Full of approachable means of eating healthy. I love it.

  6. Great post! People DO overeat on Superbowl Sunday, especially at parties. I was thinking of pita chips with guacamole made with avocado and salsa. Would that qualify as healthy despite the higher fat of avocadoes? It’s good fat, right?! Maybe balance it with some fresh raw vegetables….

    BroccoliHut Reply:

Avocado is indeed a healthy fat–it’s a rich source of MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) which help lower LDL cholesterol and keep your liver healthy.
Seth and I always make a taco bar for Super Bowl Sunday, including a big bowl of guac! We make ours with avocado, salt, lime juice, cilantro, and a little chopped up tomato.

  7. I’ve never tried baked onion rings–must.make.now.

  8. Such a great post!
People use Superbowl (and many other holidays) as an excuse to overindulge on unhealthy foods, when in reality it doesn’t have to be that way.
    Your recipes are proof!

  9. Soft Asian Summer Rolls are great. I first had them in Paris and couldn’t get enough on hot days. Never thought of them as a party food but I will take it.

  10. I am more of the buffalo wings type guy! I tend to indulge during the big game and not worry about quality of food. Anything will do.

  11. All these recipes look divine! I especially love the edamame hummus dip and the pumpkin chili. Those may just be the next two recipes I make for tomorrow, along with my apple chicken sausage casserole (http://ohshineon.com/2012/02/02/for-tom/). Thanks!
