Taste-bud Rehab

Generally, I am a patient person: I remain calm in traffic jams, I wait my turn to speak in class, and I keep my cool when confronted with a long line. However, my patience ends when it comes to food. After I’ve prepared a dish, I just can’t wait for it to cool off before I dig in! Inevitably, I end up with burned taste-buds, not to mention a feeling of regret that I didn’t wait just a few more minutes. Today, I experienced this recurring burn scenario not once, not twice, but three times—once at each meal. I think it’s best that I forego my nightly cup of hot tea tonight in the interest of some taste-bud rehab. Do you burn your tongue often? Do you have any remedies to expedite the healing process?

Perhaps I burned my mouth so often today because my meals were just so damn enticing.

Monday

One of my favorite smoothie combinations in high school was strawberry-orange; I loved it so much that I had it at least three times a week during my senior year. As you might expect, I became a bit burned out. Last night, however, I rekindled my love for this tasty fruit duo.

Tuesday

To be honest, I bought these chocolate-covered sunflower seeds for the express purpose of using them as an oatmeal topping. I wanted to dig in before they all melted. Hence, burn #1.

My lunchtime was unexpectedly belated due to a long-winded professor. So by the time I sat down to some scrambled tofu, my stomach was demanding food, pronto—no time for letting it cool down. Yep, burn #2 ensued.

I’ve had this delicata squash on my countertop for the past week; I was at a loss for ways to prepare it. In the end, I just roasted it and stuffed it with curried couscous, chickpeas, & cashews. I stuffed the squash straight out of the oven and started shoveling away just moments later…my poor mouth was accordingly burned for the third time today. At least it was still delicious!

I want to be sure and catch The Little Couple tonight, so I must now bid you farewell. Have a happy Wednesday.

  1. Drink lots of ice water to speed up the healing process.

My mom loves those chocolate-covered sunflower seeds from TJ’s :)

You know I’ll be watching ‘The Little Couple’ tonight as well! Niiiiight.

  2. Hmmm…I’ve never tried delicata squash! It looks good!

  3. I always burn my mouth by not being patient enough for my food to cool down. The squash isn’t your fault though, those things seem to retain heat like nothing else! Those chocolate-covered sunflower seeds are really cute. :)

  4. I used to burn my mouth all the time. I think I don’t have any skin left on the roof of my mouth.
I love the idea of chocolate sunflower seeds on oatmeal! I’m always looking for a new way to fit in chocolate. I bet it’d make a great “candy granola” too

  5. Isn’t that squash delicious??

I burn my mouth almost everyday.. especially with oats.. I’m too darn impatient!

  6. I burn my mouth almost every morning on my oats. It’s even worse when I have my oats and coffee at the same time! Taking food photos helps though, gives it a little time to cool down first ;)

  7. I burn my mouth all the time. I like my food piping hot and it is a sacrafice I am willing to make!

  8. i can drink nearly scalding hot coffee. and like it that way. i am sick, i know :)

  9. I burn my tongue mostly on coffee -____- And sometimes hot foods, like oats straight when they’re finished cooking.

The stuffed squash definitely looks like it’d be worth burning my tongue on :)

  10. I burned the heck outta my tounge one night on some cocoa, do not drink water… do some milk. Or any dairy for that matter, it will coat the tounge and soothe more than water would.

Although, if my food was THAT enticing i dont think i would be able to wait either. NEED to find some chcolate sunflower seeds stat!

  11. Aww, sorry about the burned tastebuds. I always do that with any hot beverage, especially hot chocolate!

Your stuffed squash looks amazing. I think I’m going to roast + stuff a squash this week, too. :-)

  12. You always have the most delightful stuffed sqaush! I love them!

Hm. Burnt tongue seriously sucks. I don’t know how to remedy that…suck on ice cubes? But that would only be temporary…

  13. Ahh I do that all the time!! I’m just so eager to dig in that I completely ignore the tongue burning part.. I do it a lot with coffee and tea too!!

  17. haha- I burn my tongue on the regular :) Great meals- especially the stuffed squash (one of my favorite dishes). Your choco covered sunflower seeds are making me excited for my thanksgiving TJs trip

  18. I burn my tongue all the time because I’m always too anxious to try the meal and also like the warm food in general, so yes, I burn ALL the time! :D

  19. I do this all the time! Especially with oatmeal! It’s just so good I want to finish the bowl in 5 minutes!

I just keep drinking ice water until the pain goes away.

  20. I burn my tongue almost every morning! I like my coffee and hot breakfasts – I can’t wait ;)

Your stuffed squash looks awesome!! I’ve never had that variety before, it sounds great!

  21. This post made me laugh because I can SO relate… I should not ever eat anything hot because I always burn my mouth!! It doesn’t help if I let it cool down a bit, either. ’tis annoying. Then I end up chomping on ice cubes, which doesn’t help unless you’re actually doing it, so you wind up feeling water-logged. :p

  22. I’m often impatient and burn my tongue, or I’ll do something without thinking like cut open a piping hot sweet potato and then lick the knife. Duh. Some days I think I’ll never be able to taste anything when I’m old since I’ve burned my tongue so many times.

I would have burnt mine a few time yesterday with all those yummy eats. Bet the chocolate covered sunflower seeds on your cream of wheat tasted diving. I just finished off some sunflower seed butter myself. Love that stuff!

  23. ok..choc covered sunflower seed.. can it get any better

  25. There is nothing worse than burned tastebuds.

I have never seen that squash before – I must keep my eyes peeled at the supermarket!

  26. ahhh food burns are the WORST! all they do is linger and make me even more mad during the day. however, i never learn because i do this all the time.

  27. I’m the same way! Mostly with baked goods – I never let them cool. No suggestions on the burnt tongue though. I just wait it out!

  28. dude I’m the SAME way! And if I burn my tongue I still keep going! How did you make that tofu scramble?! It looks SUPERRRRRRRRRR good!

  31. I always burn my tongue because of impatience!! But I’d be really bad if I had food as good as yours ;)

LOL- that totally sounds like a bad pick-up line!

  32. I had to laugh because I can so relate to your taste buds burning! I am one that also can’t wait to eat when my food is ready. I love to cook, and I love my food, so I am always eager to eat what I made right away. Also, if I make a hot meal/dish I want to eat it while still quite warm, so yes, I do end up burning my mouth.
It usually happens the most with oatmeal, I love warm/hot oats, and usually what happens is that I burn the roof of my mouth, and sometimes it is bad, it forms a blister right away and the skin of my mouth peels of minutes after…it hurts. The worse part is that it happens with a certain frequency… seems like I never lear, and my husband keep saying “so why to you do eat it so hot again?”
Oh, and I love delicata squash, I discovered it recently (I always ended up getting either acorn or my favorite butternut) and loved the texture, it is one of the smoothest squashes I have had, lovely roasted!
