The Art of Coning
My grandfather is a genius. No matter that he was a hard-working engineer for several decades—his true act of brilliance was the invention of coning.
What is “coning,” you ask? Within the Yoder family, coning is Granddaddy’s trademark technique of spooning around the sides of the ice cream container (to create a cone shape), in hopes that the fellow ice cream fans of the household will not notice its absence. In essence, coning is merely “evening out’” the contents of the ice cream tub, so obviously those Calories don’t count:)
While Granddaddy chooses to apply the art of coning to ice cream (Tin Roof flavor, to be precise), I have adapted the practice to the nut butter container. Observe the current state of my peanut butter jar:
Yes, I have yet another confession to make—I’ve been known to snack on a few scrapes of nut butter throughout the day to satisfy my sweet fat tooth. While it’s not the most sanitary habit, I figure my periodic coning keeps the jar nice and tidy.
Any other fellow secret snackers out there? Granddaddy and I can’t be the only ones known to sneak a bite or two…
Although it would be pretty awesome to live on spoons of peanut butter alone, I did manage to eat a few other things today:
I was in a savory sort of mood this morning, so I seized the opportunity to test out Nasoya’s Tofu Plus. I am particularly psyched about the extra calcium fortification in this product; as a girl who has struggled with amenorrhea in the past, I am continually concerned about the state of my bones and hence my calcium intake as well.
…and it tastes delicious too. I snuck a few bites of the raw product in the cooking stages, you know, for quality control. It worked beautifully in my scrambled tofu recipe.
Before heading to class, I prepared one of my favorite salad combinations which shall henceforth be referred to as my “Strawberry Fields Forever” Salad—the song gets stuck in my head, every time I make this salad. On the side I had my current obsession (aka lemon hummus) served on Flat Out Crisps.
I needed a study break this evening, so I took the time to bake up a lentil loaf. I served it up with the traditional accompaniments, corn, veggies, and stewed apples.
Back to the books I go, my friends. Toodles.

I know exactly where you’re coming from on the ‘coning of the nut butter front’. It’s important to keep things neat and tidy, though. Right? Why is it that food that looks like poo always tastes so fantastic?
LOVE the coning definition – it’s nice to know a word exists out there for something that I do all the time
This made my night so much better!
Lemon hummus? That sounds awesome! I love your Strawberry Fields Forever salad, too!
Have a lovely night, Caroline!
lol!! Is that what it’s called?!! I do that all the time, too…cloning! I only just did it to my tub of ice cream a few minutes ago!
I would say.. that fat tooth is a great habit!!! I prefer fat over sugar thousands times more!
The lentil loaf looks stellar! But moreover, nice tofu scramble. I haven’t made that in ages, ages, ages — perhaps I should make some soon
haha, i laughed at this. my grandma and mom used to do something similar to the icecream, which involved skimming off the soft part at the top. i don’t think it was quite coning, but it was similar.
good luck with studying…almost done!
I admit I often participate in coning too! Especially with ice cream
HA, I love it! I “cone” too, and cut little pieces off the bottom of cakes and breads. These calories also do not count.
Hahaha….ove the idea of “coning”
I’ve never heard of the Flat Out crisps before. Are they new?!
haha…when I was little and got ice cream cones, my mom used to say she would make it into a cone shape for me so she could eat half. I fell for it everytime (but didn’t care because my ice cream looked pretty).
I love cottage cheese with fruit- I need to make that salad!
im a coner!!
Coning is an art!
Hahahaha
Have a great week, Caroline!
Brazilian XOXO´s,
