The Garmin Effect

I can’t say they didn’t warn me. As of this morning, I have experienced what I have dubbed “The Garmin Effect.”

A few weeks ago, when I was considering purchasing a Garmin Forerunner for myself, I consulted my brothers-in-law, who both happen to be devotees of the Garmin Forerunner, and they both told me the same thing:

“I can’t imagine training without it…it motivates me to run longer and longer distances.”

It wasn’t until this morning that I realized the truth of these words.

Over the past week, I’ve become more familiar with the GF (no, not that one), and its dazzling functionality. Oh, the timing features, maps, and customization—and don’t even get me started on the abundance of graphs! It’s no wonder that I’ve been running increasingly longer distances.

And today, I broke my PR for distance—I ran 8.07 miles!

As you may recall, one of my New Years’ Resolutions was to complete a double-digit run in terms of mileage before the end of the year. Thanks to The Garmin Effect, I may just achieve that goal!

Tell me about your latest accomplishments (exercise-related or not). What goals have you achieved lately?

After my run, I treated myself to some good eats. Check ‘em out:

Last night, I employed one of my usual procrastination methods and made some of my tart cranberry sauce. Not only did it allow me to avoid studying, but it also made a darn fine oatmeal topper for this morning.

For lunch, I packed a Waldorf Salad, plus a batch of simple white bean dip.

Dinner was another momentous occasion, as it represents the first time in a long time that I actually adhered to a recipe. Food for Living’s Tofu-Pineapple Coconut Curry was a lovely blend of sweet and spicy. I also loved the added texture from the chopped cashews. Yum.

Alright, I am off to finish off my second mug of Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride tea…then set about that pesky studying. Good night!

  2. I adore my Garmin!! I just started really running in the last few months and I think it has really helped my training & progression. I just have to remind myself to slowly increase my miles:)

  3. Congrats on the PR!

  4. I want a garmin so bad! Since i teach indoors though- I’ve stuck to my polar F6. Glad you’re enjoying your new toy. I just looked up your waldorf salad- I want to make it!

  5. Gah, this is why I’m not getting a Garmin, actually…I’ll always be competing with myself! I guess I’m just not a competitive runner at all…

You’re so close to a 10! Keep it up, Carolyn! :-)

  6. WU WU! What a great community that incourages you ! This may not ba a greeat accomplishment but I did dancing class again! I used to do that when i was little up till i turned 14 or 16 i think..and it is nearly ten years ago now and i did it again, it was suuuuuuuuch fun! I have a boyfriend and i´m not much of a club goer anyway, and doing some “sexy” dance moves was so freeing! really fun! I have never been much of a runner, i finde it hard to switch the thoughts off in my head and just feel like i´m waisting my time..any tricks?!

  7. I finally had to took off the pace function.
How about you and your Brothers Dim hit 10 next month? It will family fun.

  8. Congrats on the eight miles! I have running aspirations but not enough motivation.

I actually gasped out loud when you mentioned the Sugar Cookie tea. It hadn’t occurred to me that it would be back on the shelves now. Eek! I will have to buy tons to last throughout the year — or at least until February.

  9. I need a garmin! So glad you like it, and congrats on the 8 miles! I know you have toscas cookbooks and if you get a break from studying you need to make the deep dish butternut with pears ( in her newest book)… so delicious!!

  10. YAY, so glad you’re happy and excited about your Garmin! I love mine, too, although I haven’t used it in about six months and am not sure where the charger is… hope you reach your goal!

  11. I am thinking about buying a Garmin soon; it seems like many runners have experienced good things after using one for the first time! Glad your is inspiring you to run! Congrats on the distance PR!

  12. TOTALLY know the garmin effect…those little watches are a runner’s best friend!

I remember when 7 miles was a long run for me, then I managed to do a second half marathon! Crazy what some time and training does:)

  13. I’ve been putting homemade cranberry sauce on my oats this week too! Great minds think alike! Thanks for putting up your recipe, it’s got a few more exciting frills than mine. Congrats on your new running achievement! I haven’t gotten myself sucked into the Garmin clan, so I consider myself and my wallet lucky. But since you’re giving opportunities to share, I accomplished my longest bike ride this week – 26 miles! Last week my goal was 24 and the week before was 22… I’m trying to build up into the 30′s before it gets too cold outside!!
