The Reward of Companionship

As I mentioned in a previous post, my motivator for getting this far in the semester was the promise of our Asheville vacation. As my spring break draws to a close, I have come to the realization that just 7 weeks separate me from my organic chemistry liberation. Accordingly, I need a new “dangling carrot.” This time, I am choosing a reward that will be a little longer-lasting than a week-long vacation: I plan on rewarding myself with a dog.

Remember my list of New Years’ resolutions? You may recall that the final item on that list involved the Margot Fund, that is, the sum of money I have been setting aside for a dog of my own. I’ve been checking the classifieds for available female Jack Russell Terriers—nothing has turned up yet, but I am hopeful. Considering the special bond that I have with my parents’ JRT (Fred), I am looking forward to having one of my own to love:)

Dog-lovers unite! Tell me about your pooch. Perhaps I can live vicariously through you.

Now I have an orgo test to study for, so let’s make this a quick one!

I had some leftover silken tofu and a bit of pumpkin hanging out in the fridge…hence, Tofu-Banana-Pumpkin-French Toast was born. The recipe is the same as the original recipe, just add 1/4 cup pumpkin puree to the batter.

I took a break from studying this afternoon to make a colorful salad.

Sorry to bore you with another egg white wrap. Culinary creativity is not a priority today, I’m afraid!

Off to immerse myself in dehydrohalogenation. Good night!

  1. I have a golden retriever! Dogs are a handful, but totally worth it.

  2. I have a mutt named Chooey. She was abandoned in a cardboard box in the woods near the shelter, and thankfully was rescued by the shelter employees. She was estimated to be about 6 weeks old when they found her and has patella luxation in her hips, a snaggletooth, and is tiny! But she’s perfect, clingy, extremely energetic, and a true blessing. Kiwi (you remember, my first dog) is watching over us and happy to see that Chooey fits right in.

  3. My dog, Zoe…kind of found me! My ex and I found her (a min-pin) and no one claimed her.

My ex is no longer in my life but my Zoe is…you know what? She senses when something’s up with me. When my brother died she like…knew. I would be having sad days and in a daze and she would come up and stare at me.

I know you will love your dog when you get one. I like the small ones (though the teacup variety scare me as I feel I would squah them) the little dogs are like cats. Burrowers and snugglers…

Hi again by the way…read you everyday and just don’t comment as much.
The nutritious food you eat always looks so delicious and inspires me to eat more variety.

  4. Great idea to use silken tofu for french toast!

  5. I totally forgot about that resolution!! Ahhh so excited for you to finally get a dog. I guess I’ll have to come visit you to meet your soon-to-be pup!

  6. I have a Jack Russell, too! Remember, though, that at lot of classified ads are from unofficial breeders and puppy mills, and its not good to support that kinda business. Why don’t you try looking online at some Jack Russell rescue groups, or going to your local shelter to see if any are available?

  7. G & R are enjoying their new backyard play surface as we speak and hopefully not digging.

  8. The wrap looks delicious!

  9. I love love love eggs and feta together. That wrap sounds/looks perfect

  10. I also can’t wait to get a dog! However, I’m waiting until I finish grad school, which is still a year away! :( I do like the idea of starting a fund for it though! Good luck finding your JRT! :)

  11. ahhhh congrats on your puppy decision!!!! i can’t WAIT to see the pup you decide on :) glad you had such an awesome spring break!

  12. Hi Caroline,

regular reader, very rare commenter here… We too, have a JRT, and couldn’t be more thankful for taking the time to get to know a responsible breeder. There are patella issues and a few other things so the best bet is to choose a puppy whose parents have been genetically screened. It also does make a difference how the little pup spends his/her first few weeks. So best of luck to you! JRT-s are so much fun, their smartness and kindness combined with a huuuuuge urge to move… So I bet you’ll be running a lot together. :) Wishing you a quick recovery too!

  13. Congrats on the decision to get a dog. They are lots of work but lots of fun! Your salad looks awesome.
