The Salty Sweater
Last Friday when a registered dietitian came to visit my class, I had a revelation. Although most of the presentation consisted of a review of nutrition basics, one slide in particular caught my attention; it discussed the notion of a “salty sweater.” A salty sweater is not some kind of strange winter garment but rather a description of an individual with salty tasting sweat and who develops a salty film on the skin after sweat dries. Appetizing, no? Nonetheless, this description accurately describes my “sweatin’ style,” so I have come to the conclusion that I am a salty sweater. Perhaps this provides an explanation for my consistently low blood pressure, despite normal to high sodium intake. Salty sweaters are instructed to replace all that lost sodium by snacking on salty foods such as pretzels, soups, or sports drinks following exercise. Sweet. Another excuse to chow down on pretzels:)
Have you ever heard of the “salty sweater” before? Do you think you are one?
With all that prattle about perspiration out of the way, let’s eat:
Tuesday
I am really digging the peach-hemp dynamic these days. If you have any peach smoothie recipes to share, please let me know!
Wednesday
Although I have prepared multiple bowls of overnight oats in the past, today marked the first time I tried it with magical Greek yogurt. What a thick and delicious treat! It was pretty awesome with plain Oikos, but I bet it would be even better with creamy-dreamy Fage 2%…
Considering how much I enjoy my Caribbean Chickpea Salad (greens, chickpeas, mango, & peanut dressing), I decided it would be fantastic stuffed into a whole wheat pita. This version included spinach, Heat Is On PB, mango, and chickpeas. YUM.
The dinner menu this evening consisted of my all-time favorite recipe: Cashew Ginger Tofu from Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan. This is my kind of comfort food.
Off to chill with Alanna and So You Think You Can Dance…Ciao!

Salty sweater… sounds more like some new fall fashion phenomenon
I have never heard of a “salty sweater” before, but come to think of it, I might just be one. I have always had low blood pressure and I always crave salty foods. At least now I have an excuse for eating olives out of the jar
Why oh why does Oikos not make a 2%? I have asked myself this question over and over, but alas, I am content with the Fage. Maybe we should start a blogger petition…
Anyway, I know that once in awhile I can taste the salt in my sweat (god that sounds sick, eh?) but it’s not a very noticable thing. Back when I swam, I used to sweat chlorine even when I wasn’t in the pool. Attractive.
Those oats look so creamy and delicious!
My boyfriends skin is extremely salty.. I always wondered why! LOL
I am definitely a salty sweater, and like you have low blood pressure. Sounds like a good excuse to eat more pickles!!!
I have really low blood pressure, but nothing seems to help. So I’m always dizzy :/
Love that cashew tofu dinner, it looks great
Sweat isn’t supposed to taste salty?? O my, maybe I’m a salty sweater too then (thought the title was referring to a real sweater, lol), my blood pressure is low like you. Mmm… pretzels here I come!
Loving those overnight oats! And I’m not a salty sweater;)

I am excited for this upcoming season of SYTYCD! I like a lot of the people they picked! I like the salty sweet combo a lot. Have you tried mojo bars? They capitalize on this big time!
I really don’t sweat at all so I wouldn’t know if I was a salty sweater. I guess not.
That caribbean chickpea salad looks oh so good! Yum!
I’ve never heard of that… but I’m definitely checking it out because I tend to crave salty food, otherwise I feel weak or loose head.
I’m loving that pita of yours!
I’m lucky in that I don’t sweat much at all. I usually will just get a sheen on my skin, but no dripping.
I thought everyone was a salty sweater! I thought that was the definition of sweat but I guess not? I’m definitely a salty sweater and also have low blood pressure! Thanks for sharing the info, very interesting
I have never heard the term “salty sweater” before, but I definitely am one! My dog love to lick my legs & arms after a workout!
What was the explanation for why some people are salty sweaters – because of the low blood pressure, or does it cause the low blood pressure? Changing your salt intake or upping your potassium may be a good experiment. Just another example of the body finding balance!
Hmm…I’m not sure if I’m a salty sweater or not. Can’t say I’ve ever licked myself! I do know that I don’t have HIGH blood pressure, though–sodium intake has never created a problem for me (and it was much higher at one point than it is now!). Definitely possible though.
I know I’m a salty sweater. To compensate I salt everything. Excessively. People look at me odd in the dining hall and think it’s unhealthy but I explain to them why it’s actually proper for me to do
I’m pretty sure I’m a salty sweater, too. Haven’t been sweating so much recently and haven’t craved salt either, so I think that explains it!
That ginger tofu looks so good. I really need ED&BV!
that chickpea and mango pita looks amazing! what a great combo of flavors
very interesting about the salty sweat! I have no idea if I am or not, i have tasted my sweat sometimes on my lips during a workout and it is quite salty!
I SO need to try The Heat is On PB! That sounds amazing!
I NEED to go to TJs so I can restock on broc slaw!!! I’m feeling so TJs deprived right now. Jealous of you itty bitty mini little spoooooon
