The Squirrel Express

As is typical for a college campus, Duke has a booming squirrel population. Every stroll to the gym, every trek to class inevitably includes a few squirrel sightings, as they either peer inside trash cans for food or abruptly jump amidst the Gothic arches—in short, Duke’s squirrels are abundant, hungry, and bold. That last attribute was made more apparent to me this morning as I walked to the gym. I spotted a pair of rambunctious rodents in my path. As a mighty human, I just kept on walking, figuring that they would move out of my path. WRONG.

Before I knew it, there was a squirrel attached to my leg. Apparently, this little creature decided to hitch a ride on The Squirrel Express, aka my calf. Obviously startled, I gave a little shake, and he was soon on his merry way. Granted, the squirrel was attached to me for all of two steps—but still, I was sufficiently freaked out.

How do you feel about squirrels? Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? Even before this morning’s incident, I’ve had proper deference for squirrels; their brazenness intimidates my timid soul.

Did I just devote a post to a discussion of squirrels? Yep, I did.

Anyway, onto the grub!

This PB-banana sandwich was pretty rockin’—I had forgotten how much dig this brand of PB.

Lunch was a mock tuna masterpiece. The addition of chives was pretty genius, if I do say so myself.

Now I am off to class…then to the semi-formal! Happy weekend to all.

  1. I think that should be the name of a band – Squirrel Express.

  2. That squirrel story is hilarious! I’d be freaked out too! We have an albino squirrel that lives in our neighborhood off campus.. it’s been alive since my sisters went to my school! But not a fan, they’re everywhere.

    Have fun at the semi-formal!

  3. Squirrels are like evil in England, seriously vicious- cannot imagine how scary it must be having one attached to your leg!! Eeek!
Elvis sammie for breakfast- perfect start to the day:)
    xx

  4. Haha oh my god! I cannot believe a squirrel jumped on your leg. That is crazy. I admit I like squirrels :) One time we had a squirrel next on top of a column at our old house, and the squirrel had little squirrel babies.

I love your mock tuna salad; I’ve packed it in my Laptop Lunchbox before :D . And yesterday I tried your curried tofu salad– excellent!

  5. LOL – this made my day :D He was obviously a little confused ;)

Love the eats – as usual, beautiful and delicious looking :)

  6. haha that’s so weird that a squirrel attached itself to your leg. Usually they run away!

I need pb + banana back in my life

  7. Eeks…that totally would have freaked me out..haha! There are a *ton* of squirrels at my campus too. I don’t think I’ll ever forget your story whenever I walk by a group of them now.

Your eats are beautiful and delicious looking as always! And thanks for the comment on my blog, letting me know about grapes and ginger and oats. :D Unfortunetly, I already ate breakfast before reading this brilliant idea. But you totally inspired me to try this out the next time around. That sounds so delicious. :D

  8. Your mock tuna looks heavenly! Actually, I’ve been trying to cut back on my tuna intake (mercury scares me). I think I’m gonna have to give this recipe a try.

Squirrels are nuts! They have sort of this weird sense of entitlement. They cross the street whenever they want to, they just jump in front of you and hop all over the place like they own the world. I’m glad you were OK once you got your furry ‘friend’ off of your leg. A squirrel got into my house once. I stayed in my room and wouldn’t leave until my grandmother chased it out with a broom. It was so freaky!

  9. LOL LOL LOL! oh my gosh literally… i have never met a squirrel so feisty as to fasten itself to my leg – aren’t you a lucky one! i think you are going to remember this awesome story forever. i remember i went to an acting workshop in north carolina one time…friendliest and boldest squirrels i ever met. i really do remember that their behavior stuck out compared to any other squirrel ever – but not one ever jumped on me! haha, thanks for the entertaining story!

  10. I’ve spoken with the squirrel. He didn’t mean to alarm you, but was hoping for a taste of your renowned PB and banana sandwiches. Bring one the next time you head to the gym. He’ll be waiting.

Oh Caroline, you are such an english major! :]
    I love it.

  12. I am absolutely terrified of squirrels. One of the great things about moving from Canada home of many many squirrels to Australia is there is none down under yay!

  13. HAHA weeeiird squirrel encounter!! I would have freaked :D Have so much fun at formal!

  14. Hey, Caroline!
    Loved your blog!
    Delicious eats… Hahaha ;)
    Have a great weekend, girlie!
    Brazilian XOXO´s,

  15. We have more of a fox problem than squirrels- I live right in the city centre so assumed it wouldn’t be an issue here, but one morning, I looked out my window and a fox was staring straight at me. I know squirrels can be viscious, but I am more scared of foxes!

Can’t wait to hear how the formal went!

  16. Haha omg I totally would have been freaked out by that squirrel! I like them (they’re so cute) but I definitely don’t want one touching me.

It’s so funny you posted this because I have my own squirrel story. I saw one stealing a full size American flag the other day while I was driving and took a picture. I keep meaning to post it on my blog!

  17. ew. squirrel germies. anyways, that dress looks super cute, i hope we get to see a pic of you and seth in an upcoming post :)

  18. Oh my gosh! I have no personal squirrel stories, but as long as they stay at a reasonable distance, I have no problem with them. I think you handled your situation as….delicately as was possible. Hopefully you can avoid any future squirrel attacks though!

    :)

  20. You kind of remind me of squirrels yourself..cute, adorable, kind of tiny, but with surprising will power, stubborness, and diligence! :-)

  21. Too funny! We had squirrels get into our campus townhouse once, it was a huge issue! Your mock tuna salad looks awesome too, I’ll have to try it out.

  22. The squirrels on my campus are decidedly creepy. I had a friend almost get knocked out by several squirrels pushing their nest out of a tree and onto her head. I personally have been “stalked” and they have a tendency to run over your feet if you sit on benches too long ;)
