Top Food Inventions

Sure, we all agree that electricity, the internet, and the camera are among history’s top inventions…but have you ever considered the most important food inventions?

Apparently the clever people over at Business Insider have. They’ve compiled a list of the 25 most important inventions specifically related to food and drink.

As you’ll see if you click through the slideshow, their top picks include such basics as “the fork,” “fire,” and “salt.” The food science nerd in me was delighted to see that pasteurization made the list, too.

Still, I can’t help but think of a few omissions from the list. Although I don’t personally have the most positive experiences with it, I think many people would wonder why the microwave did not appear on the list. Particularly in today’s convenience-driven world, much of the population (perhaps all of the college-aged population) relies on the microwave for sustenance.

What would you add to the list of top food inventions?

Onto the eats!

For breakfast, I put together a quick breakfast parfait featuring some fresh blueberries—an indulgence from last week’s shopping trip.

Last night I completely forgot to pack my lunch…until about 12:30AM. I slapped together something using the ingredients in my fridge. Amazingly, it wasn’t a bad meal.

Tonight’s dinner was an Ellie recipe, Salmon Cakes with Ginger Sesame Sauce.

My tweaks:

-I used salmon from a pouch instead the canned variety.

-I scaled down the recipe to make a hearty serving for just myself. The scaled down ingredients would have required 2/3 of a large egg—not exactly a convenient quantity. I used 1 small egg instead.

Considering my extreme lack of pancake-flipping skills, I was a little nervous about the cake-flipping required in this recipe. I managed to keep them together—although they were a tad crumbly in texture. I really enjoyed the crunch provided by the water chestnuts though. The accompanying dipping sauce was pretty phenomenal, largely due to the sesame oil.

You can make these cakes for yourself by checking out the recipe online: Salmon Cakes with Creamy Ginger-Sesame Sauce

Alright, I am off to get some homework done. Good night!

  1. I agree with the microwave deserving to be on the list.

Those salmon cakes sound good! I love salmon <3

  2. Who invented the peanut butter grinder?

  3. These salmon cakes look amazing!

  4. I’ve long been waiting for someone to invent a easy- packable food processor, as well as a packable Vitamix blender. One can only wish :)

  5. Vegetable steamer, mandoline, SPIRALIZER…oh, wow. What a thought provoking Q.
Your lunch is a prme example of a healthily stocked fridge. (0:

  6. Such a fun list! In terms of kitchen electronics, I add the stand mixture and magic bullet ;) to that last!! Beautiful parfait (as always) and I want to make your dressing from lunch. Hope you have a nice Friday

  7. First of all; please know that I’m not trying to offend you in any way. I like your blog and I think you’ve a great style of writing and such a charming and friendly personality.
I’ve got a question for you though. Do you feel like you’re completely free from your ED. I know ( well at least I think I know because of your blog) you’re not skipping meals, eating a wide variety of foods, etc. but at the same time I almost never see candy/snacks (I know you don’t post anything, but still), a really big meal, a take-out meal different than the “safe” salads. You eat so, so healthy. Where’s the frap with whipped cream, where’s the chips…I’m not saying at all that should be a daily diet but I think it’s part of life.
I’m asking it because my ED was never about skipping or starving, it was about only eating “healthy” stuff. You mentioned your behavior at the salad bar and it was EXACTLY what I would do during my ED (all salad leaves, no dressing or only vinegar, few toppings…) I would love to hear about this from you!

  8. I had almost the same exact thing for lunch the other day! I met with a personal trainer and we were talking about my diet and I told her what I ate and she gasped and said thats it? I explained that I was full but was hungry again about an hour and a half later. Any advice to give it more staying power?

  9. I’ve made the same mistake of forgetting to pack my lunch the night before, and have realized it at 4:30am when I’m getting ready for the gym in the morning. Same as you, they’ve ended up being some of my best lunches! Although I could do without the added stress and rushing of packing it that early and last-minute…

  10. Can you post the recipe for your homemade lemon-tahini dressing? Your salad looks incredible!

  11. I absolutely *love* salmon cakes. They’re one of my favorite meals. :D
