Waffle Wars

Since discovering the wonders of natural foods, my frozen waffle horizons have expanded far beyond the Eggo world. With companies like Kashi, Van’s, and Nature’s Path each producing several varieties, I could probably sample a different flavor every week (hmm…not a bad idea…). Anyway, here are a few of my most recent favorites:

Whole Foods’ 365 Organic Mini Blueberry Wafflesmw6

As an admitted sucker for anything miniature and a die-hard blueberry devotee, I had to buy these when I saw them in my local Whole Foods. (OK, the surprisingly low price tag didn’t hurt either).

  • For 2 sets of 4-mini waffles: 140 kcalories, 4.5 grams of fat, 4 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fiber, and 4 grams of protein
  • Vegan
  • $2.39 for a box containing 8 sets of 4 mini waffles

Other notes:

  • These waffles have a subtle sweetness on their own, even without added syrup; the 4 grams of sugar present in the waffles are due to the inclusion of natural pear juice in the ingredients list. Sounds like a fab alternative to HFCS!
  • One minor drawback is that these tasty little suckers are not whole grain, although whole wheat flour is included in the ingredients list; the chief component is organic enriched white flour.
  • Bonus: elderberry extract!

(Side note: A few weeks after enjoying my waffles this way, I noticed this recipe on the Whole Foods website. Looks like the recipe developers have been getting a little inspiration from The Broccoli Hut…)

Nature’s Path FlaxPlus Waffles with Figsfw3

Several years ago, while I was in search of some Kashi waffles, I stumbled upon an alternative brand, Nature’s Path. I picked up a box of their blueberry waffles (which are sadly no longer available), and let’s just say I’ve been a loyal Nature’s Path customer ever since. This new variety features slightly more exotic ingredients: flax and figs. It’s alliteratively delicious:)

  • For 2 waffles: 160 kcalories, 7 grams of fat, 5 grams of sugar, 4 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein
  • Vegan
  • $3.39 for a box containing 6 waffles

Other notes:

  • Entirely whole grain!  The sole grain present in these unique breakfast treats is organic whole wheat flour.
  • HFCS-free! The 5 grams of sugar is due to evaporated cane juice in the ingredients list.
  • The 7 grams of fat is healthy fat–the flax provides a valuable, vegetarian source of omega 3 fatty acids.
