Weight Loss Winner?
One of the many blogs I read on a regular basis is the New York Times’ “Well” blog which covers all subjects related to health. Yesterday, the topic of discussion was a comparison of popular weight loss programs, as evaluated by a recent feature in Consumer Reports. The winner? Jenny Craig.
As the article explains, it appears that CR based its scoring on results from a recent research study in which Jenny Craig participants demonstrated both adherence and weight loss success. The major confounder variable in this study is the fact that the participants received thousands of dollars’ worth of the diet’s pre-packaged foods for free.
From a dietitian’s perspective, I’ve always considered Weight Watchers to be the ideal combination of sound nutrition and strong social support. However, I’ve never endeavored to lose weight on any weight loss program, so I can’t offer much insight from personal experience.
Have you ever followed a specific weight loss program? Did you have success with it? What were the pros and cons?
Onto the eats!
For breakfast I made an old summertime favorite—toast with mashed banana & avocado. YUM.
The mid-day meal was an Ellie recipe, Grilled Thai Beef Salad.
My tweak:
-I used tofu instead of beef.
The marinade/dressing for this salad was amazing! It was a great combination of savory (soy sauce), spice (curry paste), and sweet (brown sugar). I will definitely use it again for future dishes.
The recipe is here: Grilled Thai Beef Salad
Tonight’s dinner was a modified ratatouille featuring my beloved chickpeas.
I will leave you with a few Margot photos from this afternoon’s UPS delivery!

Your little puppy is just too adorable!!!
I honestly don’t think diets work. I think people need to adopt a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix.
Nope, never followed any weight loss programs, though the only one I’ve ever heard of really having any type of semi sustainable success seems to be weight watchers. And even then, a lot of the times those on it either seem to be stuck on it for life or gain weight back and have to join back up again. It seems like most of the real, long term success cases are the ones that do it on their OWN weight loss program. Aka healthy living
PS – Margot = ADORABLE
I agree with you about Weight Watchers. It is more of an adaptive lifestyle change, which provides longer lasting results. My grandparents have spent 100s of dollars on programs like nutri system and jenny craig, and their weight loss has yet to stick. They may lose some weight at first but they always gain it back when they finish the diet because they go back to old habits. Weight watchers is good for training the brain on portion control and healthy choices, so it’s definitely one of the better diets out there.
Hi Caroline,
I have been reading your blog for a while and LOVE it for many reasons
Thankyou for producing it! I just wnated to say though, you don’t seem to eat many calories… as a recovered anorexic (I mean I am although I know you are too) I can see you don’t eat much… is this really everything you eat in a day? It makes me feel like I eat vast quantities in comparison, and that’s just for me to maintain my petite frame on an averagely active lifestyle!
Thanks again
PS Margo is sooooo sweet!
PPS Diets are a hideous idea. Common sense and nutritional education- and sensible choices- are all that are needed, in my opinion/experience.
I’ve never thought about combining Avocado and banana before. Looks like a tasty combination!
Such an interesting article. As economist, I love reading about of how studies were conducted and sonoften, the result is good but the methodology is flawed.
I haven’t tried any specific diets. Growing up, my Mom really pushed everything in moderation and I have taken on the same thought process. If I feel my jeans getting a little tight, I will lighten up a bit. I know that the WW points plan has worked really well for a lot of my friends and family though. And I like that their new points plus plan encourages participants to eat more real/clean foods. banana and avocado hmmm? I must try!
I like this toy…to poop in.
omg those pictures of your dog are soooo adorable!!!
your meals always look soo good and the pup is too cute!
I am looking for a good vegan protein and i was just wondering which one you prefer?
The cheaters’ calzone looks intriguing. I love calzones from Mellow Mushroom and I’m sure I don’t want to know the fat/calorie content! So maybe this will be a littl kinder to the hips.
I lost 50 pounds on Weight Watchers in high school, and I think it is a good introduction to weight loss for some people. In the long run for me, it encouraged compulsive points-counting and did not emphasize nutrient density or the importance of variety in one’s diet. For example, I would eat a Tootsie pop every day for my mid-morning snack because it was only 1 point!
Hehe your puppy is so darn cute!
The only diet I can say that really helped me, but wasn’t really a diet…was the detox I went on and it helped retrain my body how to eat and when to know I was hungry and to portion control. That really helped me a bunch more than anything else.
Great meals you got going on here missy!
