Welcome to Alex City, AL

Livin' it up on the Sea Doo
Hello again, blog world! I have spent the past weekend relaxing in Alexander City, Alabama where my family has a home on the lake. I got some good tube-time in (with the bruises to prove it) and browsed through the local farmers’ market. I love visiting small town farmers’ markets–they seem so much more “authentic” than the ones in larger cities. The vendors were all so friendly and informative! I got to sample some sour green plums, learn how to keep honey from spoiling, and pet a few dogs. Here are a few pics:

the friendly (albeit small) Alexander City farmers' market

me with my loot

farmers' market goods: fresh apple pie, Chilton County Peaches, green tomatoes, & fresh local honey

Is it sad that I chose this peach solely for its photogenic nature?

seriously fresh honey--harvested & jarred on 6/5. Note the honey comb in the jar!
I have much to catch up on this evening, so I’ll let the pictures do the most of the talking tonight…
Friday
The fam was having BBQ chicken, so I came up with a quick tofu version. This picture is making me crave more corn on the cob.

BBQ Tofu; zucchini; corn on the cob; salad; apple with PB

baked in Annie's BBQ, crushed tomatoes, & chili powder
Smoothie time was delectable.

mango smoothie: frozen mango, soymilk, soy protein, & cinnamon raisin granola
Saturday
After an intense run and a visit to the farmers’ market, I prepared the fastest breakfast I could think of–I was hangry.

GoLean & Cheerios with walnuts & soymilk; orange segments

I love my polka-dot bowl:)
My appetite didn’t diminish throughout the day…check out this big-a** lunch. I got some teasing from the fam for the size of this meal. Hey, I like to eat, OK?

red pepper hummus sandwich; salad with zucchini, 'shrooms, & tomato; string cheese; almonds; mango

mangled mango

I went with the “culinary flow” again for dinner and just made a modified version of the family’s meal for dinner. They all enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers while I scarfed down a delicious veggie burger.

Amy's All American Veggie Burger on whole wheat bun; watermelon; broccoli; obligatory pickle spear

with salsa, mustard, lettuce, & tomato

that most exalted veggie, in all its sunlit glory

dessert: plain yogurt with stevia, pecans, & cinnamon

yes, eating it out of a martini glass makes it taste even better
Raspberries + mango=my new favorite combo.

Sunday
Nothing like a relaxing Sunday morning with stovetop oats.

oats made with soymilk, banana, vanilla, & cinnamon, topped with walnuts & a date

perf.
After some time on the boat, I put together another simple but satisfying meal.

tofu salad sandwich; apple & PB; salad

tofu with with mustard & vegan mayo
On the way home, my mom and I stopped at Whole Foods to buy a couple of their “family meals” (which are a great deal, BTW–just $14.99 for enough food and salad to feed four!). Because the selected entree was flank steak, I seized the opportunity to get in some salad bar action. The gingered beets with carrot was my favorite component, although the garlic comes in a close second. Straight-up garlic might sound like an odd salad component, but I promise they’re tasty–after they’re well-roasted, they take on a luscious sweet flavor.

Whole Foods salad bar: mixed greens topped with beets, carrots, tomatoes, roasted garlic cloves, squash, chickpeas, & almonds; Ak-Maks & cherries

yeah, my breath is pretty rank right now

eating by color...

getting even more rainbow-tastic
Whew! Congratulations if you’ve made it this far. Once again, Mr. Gus and I bid you adieu.
