What’s in a Name?

As any frequenter of the Broccoli Hut can attest, I really like to name things. In the history of this blog alone, I’ve named several of my possessions:

There’s Andy, the Mini Cooper,

Seymour the laptop,

Nanette, the Nano,

image …and the list goes on. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that I am taking great care in choosing the name for my new puppy. I have previously referred to my future fur-child as “Margot,” but I’ve been reconsidering this name choice. Unlike an iPod or a computer, a dog lasts for up to 15 years—I want her name to mean something to me.

So I spent the majority of this past weekend brainstorming name ideas. Here is the current list:

  • Margot
  • Scarlett (as in O’Hara, after the heroine of my favorite book)
  • Lillian (as in Gilbreth, the mother from Cheaper by the Dozen)
  • Nora  (after the famed restaurant/chef, Restaurant Nora)
  • Hazel
  • Mabel
  • Camille

Do you take pleasure in naming things?

Onto the grub!

For breakfast this morning, I channeled my inner Elvis—I made a bacon-banana-PB bowl-themed bowl of oat bran.

I am making full use of my new jar of coconut butter—Mango Curry Hummus was on the lunch menu.

Tonight’s dinner was an easy Ellie recipe, Tomato, Olive, and Parmesan Pizza.

My tweaks:

-To add some more substance to this meal, I used more cheese and olives than were called for in the recipe.

This pizza could not have been simpler to make—just 6 ingredients total! It was the perfect dish to prepare after a long day of classes. Despite its simplicity, it was quite delicious; I didn’t even miss the usual tomato sauce. I would make this again, perhaps as a snack instead of a meal.

The recipe is available online: Italian Tortilla Pizza

I have some homework to do, so I must bid you good night. Stay tuned for a giveaway in the near future…

  1. that pizza looks absolutely DIVINE and DELISH.

The pup is ADORABLE! I kind of think Margot would be very appropriate and fitting!

  2. Can’t wait for the giveaway! Any hints?

  3. Delurking to vote for a puppy name! I like the name Margot (as long as the puppy is a girl lol). However, I am fond of Mabel just for the sake of being able to tell the dog “Get off the table, Mable” if the opportunity ever arose ;)

  4. omg, so cute! So glad to be e-meeting her!

  5. The name Mabel would be super adorable for a puppy! I like all your ideas, but I don’t think the names Scarlett and Lillian roll off the tongue as easily as the others.

  6. I think the name Nora & Margot are very cute! Sometimes you just have to look at the pup & a name will just fit :-D

  7. I’m into the name Hazel! I love naming everything I find.. my laptop is Penelope and my iPod is Sebastian but I’ll name everything down to ladybugs that I find

  8. Did I hear coconut and hummus? Must try soon, but I might sub pineapple as sadly no mango on hand! :(

  9. I like Scarlett! :)

  10. scarlett, or margot!

(my niece is ‘Margaux’ (she’s french) in case you want an alternate spelling!)

  11. Can I throw a new name into the ring? Peanut?

  12. I like Margot or Mabel. Both sound cute! :)

  13. I still like Margot (Margo is on my list of potential baby names). I had a Lillian once, and she was nuts, but it’s also a lovely name. My mom’s Jack Russell is named Mazie.

Your tempeh bacon looks so good! I am terrible at cooking the stuff.

  14. I think you should wait and meet your puppy first. You have your options ….so when you spend a few moments with your new friend it should probably just “pop” out.

    “Oh, hello Mabel.”

    You’ll know.

  15. I like Lillian …but its more than just the mother in cheaper by the dozen. The name Lillian Gilbreth actually comes from the name of a very famous engineering couple- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillian_Moller_Gilbreth

We learned about them a lot in my major :)

That pizza looks fab! I love making pizza on tortillas, pitas or english muffins- easy and tasty!

  16. Awe. My dog’s name was Mable. It means lovable. She was the best!

  17. Such a cute puppy! I like Hazel or Margot.

  18. I vote for Mabel or Scarlett! I like less human names when it comes to animals but those two are okay :) .
