When a Product Dies
This past weekend, I rewarded myself with a quick trip to Trader Joe’s. While I was looking forward to my usual aisle-flouncing amidst the unique foodie finds, the real objective of this visit was to stock up on the soon to be discontinued peanut flour. Unfortunately, I was too late. The usual spot for peanut flour on the shelf was instead occupied by copious amounts of pancake mix; I had missed my chance to stock up on the peanutty protein source. Boo.
As a foodie, I get legitimately upset by situations such as these—I undergo a grieving process when a product “dies.” Some of you may recall my downright obsession with Rachel’s cottage cheese cups. I used to buy them by the armload whenever I was able to locate them in grocery stores. Sadly, I was just about the only person who liked these products, apparently, as they were discontinued within a few months. After crying a little bit inside upon hearing the news, I settled for trying to re-create the magic in my own kitchen by adding fresh herbs and vegetables to regular ol’ cottage cheese. Sigh.
Have you ever grown to love a food product, only to have it discontinued? How did you deal?
I consoled myself over the loss of peanut flour with some good eats today…
Savory oats return, this time with a Mexican flair.
For lunch, I packed a batch of Lemon Ginger Hummus.
Once home from a long day of classes, I sat down to a simple, colorful meal.
Alright, I am off to attempt some chemistry homework. G’night!

Is that a purple sweet potato?
Love the purple sweet potato!!
I have two bags of peanut flour in my pantry
Let me know if you want a bag!
What I wanna know is how do they make peanut flour? Let’s try and do our own! Im confused as to how NOT to make peanut butter!
Also…of course just order online…and savor it more.
I’m with you on being upset about the discontinuation of peanut flour! May be silly and absurd topic to get upset about, but hey, i’m a foodie, what can I say
I can’t seem to find purple sweet potatoes anywhere! I’m envious of you….
I’m disappointed about the peanut flour too! I’ve had products die on me numerous times and it never gets easier (Amy’s roasted vegetable pockets was a huge loss for me).
Love that purple potato!
I’m so sad about the peanut flour. I’m hoping the blog world will soon be abuzz with a new substitute. Until then, I’m rationing my two remaining bags.
Love the purple sweet potato – did not know you could get purple ones!
I used to love LOVE the South Beach diet meals – they were perfect for a light lunch. When they were discontinued, I literally bought the entire stock at Smith’s Marketplace!
The peanut flour appearance was kinda quick at TJ’s, I didn’t even get to try it. When I was going to buy it I heard they were discontinuing…
I know how you feel about a product. We liked the Kashi Might Bites cereal around here, it was my son’s favorite (and I liked it too, yummy studying snacks!), but the product was discontinued. We were really sad we wouldn’t be able to buy the delicious cereal anymore. But life continues and we had to move on, right?! Eventually we find something new and like that one better!
But hey, I think you might be able to still buy peanut flour online, try amazon.com, they most certainly have something alike!

don’t tell anyone but word ’round town (a little birdie told me) that PF MIGHT be coming back as soon as TJs finds a cheaper distributor or something like that! so don’t get too upset yet! i’ve still got my fingers crossed haha
my boyfriend thought i was crazy stocking up on bags of peanut flour but i knew i was on to something! what a bummer!
I’m so late to comment, but have you tried the new “almond meal” at trader joes?? It popped up in mine where peanut flour used to be and its pretty amazing! Not the same, but yummy
