Wildwood Organics: A Twist on Old Favorites

Last month, I was fortunate enough to receive a bundle of treats from Wildwood Organics, including sprouted tofu burgers, probiotic hummus, and a pasta alternative. My conclusion after tasting them all? Wildwood puts a pleasant spin on some Broccoli Hut favorites, especially tofu and hummus. For the full deets, read below:

Probiotic Hummus

I know what you’re thinking: “Probiotic hummus?”  Yes indeed, the much-buzzed-about probiotics have even infiltrated the hummus industry. Before you poo-poo this product, know this: it’s delicious. It has a distinctive tang to it (due to the addition of active cultures), but it is nicely balanced by a satisfying creaminess. Also worthy of note is that this hummus is the perfect consistency: a thick paste, rather than the runny texture one often encounters in prepared hummus blends.

Nutritionally speaking (probiotics aside), Wildwood hummus is similar to other brands available. Each two-tablespoon serving contains about 60 kcal, 4.5 gram of fat, 1 gram of protein, plus 1 gram of fiber.

Pasta Slim

I’ll admit, I was reluctant to try this product—I’ve had one too many unpleasant experiences with Pasta Slim’s cousin, Tofu Shirataki noodles. As it turns out…my suspicions about slimy texture and disturbingly white color were confirmed. The texture is nothing like real pasta in my opinion, and sauces don’t adhere to it very well. You won’t be seeing this product again at the Broccoli Hut anytime soon.

If you’re still interested in trying it for yourself, here are the nutritional stats, per package: 40 kcal, 1 gram of fat, 6 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

SprouTofu Burgers

As indicated by this post, I really love a good veggie burger. While I’ve had soy-based burgers before, never had I experienced an actual tofu burger—certainly not a sprouted tofu burger. Wildwood’s unique SprouTofu burgers consist of a tofu patty, sprinkled with various veggies (think kale! carrots! corn!), and surrounded by a lovely crust. Probably due to the high fat content of these burgers (11-13 grams), they have a delicious rich flavor that is intensely satiating. Another result of the fat content is that they can be a bit greasy—blotting recommended for optimal enjoyment. Despite the blotting requirement, these burgers make for a fantastic alternative to regular veggie burgers, and I would definitely purchase them again. Now all I have to do is find a grocery store that carries them!

As for the nutritional information, these patties of joy are pretty stellar: 11-13 grams of fat (just 1.5 grams saturated), 240-320 mg sodium, 1-2 grams of fiber, 10-11 grams of protein, plus hefty doses of iron and vitamin A. Shweet.

Special thanks to Wildwood for giving me the opportunity to try these tasty treats!

Have you ever tried Wildwood products? What did you think?

  1. Nice review! I am very intrigued by the probiotic hummus. It sounds like it has potential — and I’d love to get some cultures while eating hummus…I mean seriously!

I do have to admit I somewhat like tofu shirataki, though I never think of it as regular pasta (because that would just be a lie, right?) — I wonder what this version tastes like.

Great review, Caroline! I’m off to catch up in Broccoli land…hope you’ve been having a good week!

  2. I really like their veggie burgers, probably because of the fried outside. Sometimes, a good fatty fried treat is just the right thing

  3. I’ve been looking for Pasta Slim! Looks great!

  4. those tofu burgers look great!

and i have to admit i am turned off at the thought of those noodles. too fake-foodish to me! i’d rather just eat whole grain noodles + watch the portion size instead.

  5. Great review!

I have never seen Wildwood products but I am always on the lookout for a good veggie burger. I will have to see if my grocery store has them.

I wish those noodles tasted better – I have never seen a good review of the tofu noodles…so I haven’t tried them.

    Enjoy your day!

  6. Thanks for the review- that hummus sounds interesting (and right up my ally).
I only buy ONE kind of non-dairy yogurt…and that’s Wildwood. It’s because they’re the only company that makes an unsweetened yogurt!

  7. oh no! i just bought 2 packs of those pasta slim noodles the other day bc they were on sale at WF! haha too bad i can’t return them.

  8. Loved your precise, honest review, Caroline!

Their burgers definitely sound intriguing…but the fact that they sell that nasty “noodle” makes me lose a bit of respect for the company. Honestly, carbs is not the enemy, and that is NOT pasta, it is slimy fishy bulk that is just devoid of real nutrients and calories.

Okay, that was kinda harsh…but I’m so sick of shirataki!

  9. I have not tried any of the WildWood products. I do want to try the hummus, “noodles” and tofu though!

  10. Sound good- aside from the noodles! I am scared to try wannabe-pasta… I’ve not heard good things about them from anyone. The hummus and burgers, on the other hand, look delish. I love creamy hummus!

  11. Those SprouTofu burgers sound really good! I never thought about how veggie burgers are always soy based. I’d def pick those up if I saw them in a store.

  12. oh ma gawwd i LOVE wildwood so much! you HAVEE to try their indian spice hummus. its amaaaazed

  13. My name is Dustin and I am the Marketing Coordinator for Wildwood. First, I would like to thank the Broccoli Hut for a great and honest review! We always appreciate real feedback. To address the concerns raised by our PastaSlim product; We know it is not like “traditional” pasta, and we never meant it to be. We made PastaSlim for the thousands of people who suffer from Diabetes, HyperGlycemia, and Celiac Disease and cannot have anything with gluten, which includes breads, and pastas. For an added bonus, people watching their weight can enjoy hefty portions of PastaSlim without all the calories. But again, we appreciate the honest feedback! Thank you! :)
